I want to share my wonderful experience using acupuncture with Catherine Kim-Nestaas and hope that this can help more couples to become happy parents. After my second unsuccessful IVF attempt, my husband and I were frustrated and had almost lost hope of becoming parents. Then, I remembered that my husband got an effective treatment for sleep problems and stress at TOMAS , Trondheim oriental medicine and acupuncture center. I read again the TOMAS website and discovered that Catherine, who runs the clinic, had experience with female fertility problems. I got an appointment the same day after Catherine’s regular working hours since it was urgent to get going with the treatment. Already at my first meeting with Catherine, I regained hope and joy. She explained that the situation was not as hopeless as I had thought. I wanted to get several hours per week with her to activate and stimulate the body, but she said it is plenty with one hour per week of acupuncture and moxa as well as patience and optimism. The treatment was not only acupuncture, but also herbal teas (common herbs I even picked myself in Trondheim through Catherine’s recommendation) and diet (I got a long list of products that should be eaten when one wants to get pregnant). For three months I made herbal tea every day, taking vitamins and various supplements recommended by Catherine, and I mostly ate only what was on the list to stimulate the production of healthy and strong eggs. When the time came again for IVF, we decided that this would be the third and final attempt. We were of course very nervous. This time it worked! Catherine was the first I told that I was pregnant! I was immediately offered another and completely free moxa treatment and we continued the acupuncture throughout my pregnancy to prevent potential complications. I followed all her nutritional advice. She became my pregnancy counselor. I could call her anytime, ask questions, get answers and detailed explanations and support. I looked forward to my weekly acupuncture sessions and meetings with Catherine, who was constructive and giving. She mentioned once that for most women who receive acupuncture throughout their pregnancy, the fetus turns at the right time and that they tend to give birth on the due date. Interesting, I thought, but I was not sure it would be just the same for me. But amazingly enough, my child turned exactly as described and was born on the due date (only 5 % of pregnant women give birth on due date!). My entire pregnancy went as smoothly as one can hope for. Doctors and midwives were impressed that a woman of my age (over 40) can have such a delightful and hassle-free pregnancy and a classic birth as described in the medical literature! The 15th June 2013, I delivered a beautiful and healthy baby boy! The first one to whom I sent a happy sms was, of course, Catherine! After the birth, I struggled a bit with breastfeeding and I called Catherine again and asked for advice. I was offered free acupuncture appointment the same day. I took her up on the offer which took a few hours as well. Not only did the problem disappear and my boy started to get enough milk, we also got free baby massage advice and training against colic and even a special instrument to massage babies which helped our boy against colic! Our gratitude to Catherine is immeasurable! She is an outstanding specialist in Oriental Medicine, a skilled advisor and a wonderful person! I highly recommend her services. If you have any questions, Catherine will gladly give you my phone number and I can share my experience with you in more detail.

I had tried acupuncture in conjunction with two of my three IVF attempts. These two attempts both resulted in pregnancies, but they both later aborted (one early and one late term miscarriage). I needed to get my body back on track and was seeking some new approach. A friend of mine told me that she knew of other couples dealing with infertility had achieved success using moxabustion (some in combination with shiatsu massage). I searched on Google in the Trondheim area and found Catherine who runs TOMAS. I was received with open arms by a pleasant and understanding woman. I started treatment about 3.5 months before my next IVF attempt was planned, which included acupuncture, moxabustion, herbal treatment and some dietary changes. I was treated once a week plus multiple treatments surrounding the implant. This resulted in a positive pregnancy. I continued with acupuncture and moxabustion throughout the pregnancy instead of discontinuing acupuncture on the day of the implant as I had done earlier. My story has a happy ending as I gave birth approximately 9 months later to a little miracle which is a fruit of our 4 years journey towards having a family.

I first contacted Catherine in connection with IVF treatment. I went through early menopause in my 30s, and learned that the only possibility of having children was to using donor eggs. As most people know, egg donation is not allowed in Norway yet. I have received different reactions from healthcare professionals, and was a bit tense on a feedback I got to from a different acupuncturist. With Catherine however, from the first email I was greeted with respect, understanding and a problem-solving attitude. I got an appointment the very next business day. During the first treatment, Catherine outlined a treatment program that would prepare your body for pregnancy. I felt well taken care of throughout the treatments. I could talk to her about concerns (and ask her the stupidest questions!) and were always taken seriously. Since I made contact during the two weeks before the transfer, I had two appointments a week. After the transfer, we went down to once a week treatments. I am now only days from my 2nd trimester! Concerns and the stupid questions are coming more and more of, but Catherine has patience and competence, and makes me feel that it’s okay to be occupied with whatever it may be. I had pregnancy complications (nausea and fatigue) for two weeks, but it was during the two weeks where I simply did not have time for appointments with Catherine for job reasons. I have no doubt that acupuncture has been the reason why I’ve been in outstanding form. I should also point out some nice “side effects” of acupuncture. First, I used to have trouble falling asleep. At times it had been so bad that I slept only a few hours each night. After I started with Catherine, it is not a problem anymore. I fall asleep easily and sleep quality is of an entirely different character than before. Second, it is quite obvious that acupuncture has good impact on digestion. I am very pleased with Catherine’s treatment and follow-up and can not recommend her highly enough. If anyone wants to hear more about my experience, ask Catherine for my contact information.

I contacted Catherine after having tried for half a year to have my third child. I’ve had successful pregnancies without help before, but I started to feel that my body was stressed by desire for a new baby and having two active toddlers at home. It felt very relaxing to have Catherine do acupuncture and moxa to get my body ready for a new sprout. I felt well taken care of and it didn’t take long before I got pregnant. I warmly recommend Catherine. She is welcoming and has a calmness about her which is infectious.

I was recommended by a family member to contact Catherine at TOMAS. First, it was basically for my hypothyroidism (low thyroid) and Hashimoto, and discovered that she had a good knowledge of this subject. I had just gone through my fourth miscarriage which happens very early in the pregnancy and examined at St. Olav hospital for habitual miscarriage. They were never able to find out what was repeatedly going wrong, but blamed hypothyroidism indirectly without any guidance on how to prevent another miscarriage. I sent Catherine a text message with a little info about myself, and got an appointment the same day. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Catherine has a very broad spectrum of knowledge about hormone disorders, and could also try to help me on my way with the children I’ve wanted. I went to therapy once a week with both acupuncture and moxa. Catherine had good advice on diet, gave good guidance, and she often sends email on div info which she thinks may be relevant to me. I feel that she genuinely cares about my health and feel will be well taken care of, and feel that I can ask her about everything. After a month and a half of treatments with Catherine I became pregnant again. I continue to receive good supervision and guidance from Catherine, and managed to relax and be hopeful despite my fear of losing the baby again. Now i am four months pregnant and have seen by ultrasound a healthy embryo with completely normal development. This time, it seems that everything is going well, and I believe it is largely thanks to Catherine at TOMAS. I highly recommend her.

Case

After five years with a number of failed IVF attempts, I got up the courage and booked an appointment with Catherine (I have fear of needles). I had tried many other modalities before such as reflexology, homeopathy, etc., with no success.  I got my first acupuncture + moxa a month before what I thought would be my last attempt. In addition to acupuncture and moxa, she also recommended herbs and foods which are beneficial for those who are trying to conceive. 14 days after the implant and for the first time I got a positive “pregnant” sign on the test. Unfortunately, this pregnancy lasted only 8-9 weeks before I miscarried, but since I now had confirmed that it was indeed possible to conceive, my partner and I decided to go for one more attempt. In consultation with Catherine, who from the start was very positive and had great faith that this was going to succeed, I spent some time after the miscarriage on getting my body ready before I went to work with new IVF attempt. During this period I had a weekly treatment with Catherine and followed her dietary advice and supplements. At Catherine’s request, I took some additional blood tests which showed, among other things, thyroxine values which was not quite optimal for pregnancy. She gave me a lot of background information on this subject so that I could take it up with the doctor at the fertility clinic. As a result, I was put on medication to optimize my thyroid health before the new egg was inserted. For the second time in a row, I got a positive test! Now I’m well into the 3rd trimester and everything is going well. I have no doubt that I have Catherine to thank for this!  I would also like to point out that Catherine is not only highly skilled and experienced in Oriental Medicine, but also a generous and warm person who looks and listens to the patient and seeks to find solutions. She has from day one been my pregnancy counselor no matter how strange the questions and regardless of the time. I recommend Catherine at TOMAS strongly to all those with fertility problems.
